Enchanted Realms
Artist’s statement:
As a child I was captivated by the idea of magical realms hovering just at the edge of reality. I fancied fairies at the bottom of the garden, mermaids dancing in the waves and imps whispering secrets beneath mushroom tables.
Many years later, my canvas is now a portal back to that magical time when I could believe in the impossible. With my brush I summon my childhood dreams, awaken them from their slumber and draw them back to life.
About me:
I am a Brisbane artist who grew up in the Wynnum Manly area beside the ocean and surrounded by many trees and parks. My love for fantasy and whimsical characters was first sparked by my mother who filled my head with enchanting stories growing up. She made these worlds feel real to me and these stories left a lasting impression. Both my parents were incredibly creative and led by example in teaching me how fulfilling it is to pursue the projects of your heart.
In my early years I attended art classes taught by my grandfather, Martin Butler, a formidable figurative artist. He nurtured my love for drawing and inspired me by spending his life pursuing his passion with an energy that is both infectious and unstoppable.
In my adult years, I was lucky enough to be tutored by accomplished Brisbane artist, De Gillet-Cox who generously shared everything she knows about paint and introduced me to the magic of inks.
I now teach art at a local state school where I spend my days sharing my passion for art with the next generations.
My work:
I work mostly with a mix of acrylic paint and ink but an immense curiosity ensures that I am forever experimenting and delving into new and exciting mediums. I love the energy that colour can create; from wild bursts of vibrancy brushed and scraped across the canvas, to the slow, mingling of inks. I love to capture figures and animals in gentle poses surrounded by bold, bright colours- peace in the midst of chaos.
Art has expanded to become my life and I am so grateful for the many opportunities I have been given to fuel this fire. Thank you for being here and sharing in my journey.
